Peripheral Neuropathy and (O3) Ozone

... with a word about Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

What is ozone?

Ozone is a relatively simple molecule, consisting of 3 oxygen atoms. Ozone is O3, whereas the oxygen we breathe is O2.

It is formed from molecular oxygen (O2) by ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet photolysis followed by recombination of atomic oxygen (O) with O2.  It may also be formed by passing an electrical discharge through gaseous oxygen. It is characterized by a unique odor that is often noticed during electrical storms and in the vicinity of electrical equipment. The name ozone is derived from a Greek word meaning "to smell".

Ozone is oxygen in it's most active state and is an extremely potent oxidant that has been shown to possess broad spectrum antimicrobial activity. Ozone is not just another disinfectant. Ozone is a true sterilant. It has the ability to completely destroy not only bacteria, but also viruses, spores, fungus, mold, mildew, cysts, and many other contaminants while at the same time breaking down dissolved organic materials by oxidation. When ozone (O3) breaks down it naturally reverts back to oxygen (O2).

How does ozone do this?

1. Inactivation of bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast and protozoa:

Ozone disrupts the integrity of the bacterial cell envelope through oxidation of the phospholipids and lipoproteins. In fungi, ozone inhibits cell growth at certain stages. With viruses, the ozone damages the viral capsid and disrupts the reproductive cycle by disrupting the virus-to-cell contact with peroxidation. The weak enzyme coatings on cells which make them vulnerable to invasion by viruses make them susceptible to oxidation and elimination from the body, which then replaces them with healthy cells.

2. Enhancement of circulation:

In circulatory disease, a clumping of red blood cells hinders blood flow through the small capillaries and decreases oxygen absorption due to reduced surface area. Ozone reduces or eliminates clumping and red cell flexibility is restored, along with oxygen carrying ability. Oxygenation of the tissues increases as the arterial partial pressure increases and viscosity decreases. Ozone also oxidizes the plaque in arteries, allowing the removal of the breakdown products, unclogging the blood vessels.

3. Stimulation of oxygen metabolism:

Ozone causes an increase in the red blood cell glycolysis rate. This leads to the stimulation of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG) which leads to an increase in the amount of oxygen released to the tissues. There is a stimulation of the production of the enzymes which act as free radical scavengers and cell wall protectors: glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. Ozone activates the Krebs cycle by enhancing oxidative carboxylation of pyruvate, stimulating production of ATP. Ozone also causes a significant reduction in NADH and helps to oxidize cytochrome C. Prostacyclin, a vasodilator, is also induced by ozone.

4. Formation of peroxides:

Ozone reacts with the unsaturated fatty acids of the lipid layer in cellular membranes, forming hydro peroxides. There is a synergistic effect with cellular- formed H2O2. Lipid peroxidation products include alkoxyl and peroxyl radicals, singlet oxygen, ozonides, carbonides, carbonyls, alkanes and alkenes.

5. Dissolution of malignant tumors:

Ozone inhibits tumor metabolism. In addition, ozone oxidizes the outer lipid layer of malignant cells and destroys them through cell lysis (break-down). Phagocytes produce H2O2 and hydroxyl to kill bacteria and viruses. The generation of hydroxyl by killer cells is critical to their cytotoxic capability. Ozone stimulates conversion of L- arginine to citrulline, nitrite and nitrate by phagocytes, acting on tumors.

Is Ozone safe?

The proper use of medical grade ozone is completely safe!  Ozone is a natural "treatment", whichmeans high efficiency and no side effects because it simply enhances the bodies systems by cleaning out the garbage and providing much need oxygen.

In a survey of German ozone therapists, 5,579,238 ozone treatments on 384,775 patients demonstrated a side effect rate of only 0.0007%, and the side effects were uniformly minor and not even remotely life-threatening.

In America on the other hand, over a 1,000,000 patients are hospitalized annually due to side effects of prescription medication, and over 100,000 of such individual die from such drug usage.

How is ozone administered?

Home usage:

  • Drinking ozonated water- water that is aerated with ozone gas and drunk immediately.
  • External limb bagging-bag is placed over affected area. Ozone is pumped into the bag.
  • Dental use of ozonated water-aerated with ozone and brush teeth with it immediately.
  • Ozonated water enema - ozonated water is passed through a catheter into the rectum.
  • Drinking ozonated olive oil- ozonated olive oil is drunk by the tablespoon.
  • Deep lymphatic massage with ozonated olive oil- olive oil that has been aerated with ozone until nearly solidified.
  • Ozonated bath epsom salts and sea salt- bathing in ozonated water.
  • Body suit- suit that is sealed off wrists, ankles, and neck. Humidified ozone is pumped into the body suit and lasts for 15-30 minutes.
  • Steam cabinet- a cabinet filled with ozone gases you can sit in with your head protruding for 15-30 minutes.

  • Intraarticular injection- a direct injection into the painful joint.
  • Direct injection into a tumor- ozone gases can be injected into a tumor or a cyst.
  • Autohemotherapy- 50-200ml of blood drawn into a bottle. The bottle is turned upside down and ozone is infused into the bottle and then transfused back to patient.
  • Intracutaneous blistering- ozone is injected into the skin.
  • Intramuscular- a direct injection of the ozone gases into the muscle.
  • Subcutaneous- an injection of ozone gas performed just under the skin.
  • Uterine insufflation- a catheter is placed into the uterus where ozone is slowly infused.
  • Bladder insufflation- a catheter is placed into the bladder where ozone is slowly infused.
  • Rectal insufflation- ozone is passed into the rectum through a catheter.
  • Vaginal insufflation- ozone is passed into the vagina through a catheter.
  • In the ear- a slow flow of ozone gases is run through a small tube into the ear.

- Abstract about diabetic neuropathy and ozone.

Oxidative stress is suggested to have an important role in the development of complications in diabetes.

Because ozone therapy can activate the antioxidant system, influencing the level of glycemia and some markers of endothelial cell damage, the aim of this study was to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of ozone in the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes and diabetic feet and to compare ozone with antibiotic therapy.

A randomized controlled clinical trial was performed with 101 patients divided into two groups: one (n=52) treated with ozone (local and rectal insufflation of the gas) and the other (n=49) treated with topical and systemic antibiotics.

The efficacy of the treatments was evaluated by comparing the glycemic index, the area and perimeter of the lesions and biochemical markers of oxidative stress and endothelial damage in both groups after 20 days of treatment.

Ozone treatment improved glycemic control, prevented oxidative stress, normalized levels of organic peroxides, and activated superoxide dismutase. The pharmacodynamic effect of ozone in the treatment of patients with neuromfectious diabetic foot can be ascribed to the possibility of it being a superoxide scavenger. Superoxide is considered a link between the four metabolic routes associated with diabetes pathology and its complications.

Furthermore, the healing of the lesions improved, resulting in fewer amputations than in control group. There were no side effects. These results show that medical ozone treatment could be an alternative therapy in the treatment of diabetes and its complications.
